Iroh had faced Equalists, spirits, and all manner of danger, through all that he had managed to get through, marching forward and never batting an eye at the danger.
Yet here, at a party, he was considering a full retreat. Spirits, if he could he would have broken the glass of the window he was staring out of and flown out.
In fairness he had not known it was going to be a party when he accepted President Raiko's invitation. He had been toldit was a small gathering to welcome him to the city, now that he was for the time being, a resident, while the United Forces was docked here for the extended stay.
However when he showed up at the luxurious penthouse, in a dark red three piece suit that almost coast as much as a small battle cruiser, he found himself staring down politicians, business' tycoons, and every other rich campaign donor, Raiko could fit into the room.
Part of Iroh wasn't that surprised, after all, he was the youngest General in the United Forces, heir to throne of the Fire Lord, and, if the gossip rags were to be believed the most eligible bachelor in the Fire Nation.
However despite all that, as he heard Raiko give a speech, claiming that he and the United Forces were going to sweep out crime from the city, he couldn't help but inwardly fume. He had just gotten Chief Beifong on his side by explicitly saying that United Forces was here to assist not to take over. Now by the time the newspaper ran tomorrow, he would most likely be dragged back to that terrifying woman's office for yet another "meeting."
Raiko was making Iroh's job infinitely more difficult, just to get a small win in his own political games.
However despite inwardly raging, outwardly he kept a warm and genial smile as Raiko droned on. He had grew up in the court of the Fire Nation, he was no stranger to hiding true emotions behind a smile and this was no different.
Once Raiko had finished preening, he was then set adrift, amidst a crowd of people, about half of which were eager to bend his ear about this or that or to try to get him to come to one of their fancy parties they were no doubt throwing shortly. He nodded and made as much idle small talk as he could stomach, because frankly these were the lesser of the two evils.
No the other half of the party was what really caused him a bit of panic. The women. They would pop up by his side and try to get him alone in some secluded corner, leaving Iroh to tactically extricate him self each time with enough grace to not upset her, yet firm enough she would stop trying, at least for the night. Had any of the women actually been interesting he probably would have enjoyed the attention, however that was not the case. Instead he was once again reminded of the Fire Nation Court as he could tell that most of the women vying for his attention, didn't care about him, they only cared about the titles he had and the prestige it carried.
Which in turn made them frightfully boring.
He finally manage to get away from the crowds of people and found himself sitting and catching his breath on a small secluded couch facing the window over looking the lit up city at night. He sipped on a glass of Torch as he knew soon enough someone was going to notice he was missing and he was going to have to return to the battle.
"I'd take Equalists, spirits, pirates...anything, to get out of this party." he said softly to himself as he chuckled.
